If we’re talking Halloween classics that didn’t get their flowers the first time around, Jennifer’s Body is at the top of the list. When it first dropped in 2009, it was marketed like a generic horror flick — but underneath the blood and eyeliner was a razor-sharp satire about female friendship, fame, and the monsters we make out of women.
Megan Fox plays Jennifer Check, a high school “It” girl who turns literally demonic after a failed sacrifice by an indie band looking for fame. It’s absurd, funny, and way smarter than it got credit for. Diablo Cody’s script is full of quotable lines (“Hell is a teenage girl”), and Karyn Kusama’s direction nails that mix of glossy horror and genuine heartbreak.
Sixteen years later, Jennifer’s Body has become exactly what it was meant to be — a cult classic. It’s the perfect mix of camp and commentary, and Megan Fox’s performance has only aged better with time.
So for this Halloween weekend, skip the jump scares and queue up something that actually bites back.
